Balche Tree

The Balché tree is considered sacred by the Mayans, Dzibalché owes its name to it, it is an endemic plant of the Yucatan Peninsula, it has healing properties and is part of the religious and medicinal traditions. It is used as the main ingredient of the sacred Mayan drink (Licor Balché) which is used in various healing rituals, as well as to achieve the physical and spiritual purification essential to achieve communication with their gods, to whom it was also offered.


The balché liqueur is prepared with virgin water, that is, natural well water, strips of bark and honey. The concoction is covered with palm or banana leaves and left to ferment overnight, after which it is considered ready to be consumed.


It has great cultural and ethnobotanical value since it can be used in traditional herbal medicine, it has healing properties for coughs and cleaning of infected wounds.


Currently, the Balché is consumed in the Mayan communities, being elaborated mainly for important ceremonies, such as rituals and offerings to the Hanal Pixán.
