Fort san Miguel

This is the best looking and outstanding of the set of fortifications in town due to its size and layout. The construction was overseen by engineer Juan de Leon, and the works began in 1771 and it was completed by 1801.


This building is a significant example of the military architecture in Campeche, and it was mainly used during the conflicts the city was involved through the nineteenth century. Nowadays it houses the Mayan Archaeology Museum of Campeche, with exhibits from different Mayan cities, particularly those from Calakmul.


This fortification was part of the third system of fortifications of Campeche, projected to reinforce the existing and prevent a possible disembarkation of the enemy in the surrounding areas due to the growing English expansion in the Americas.
