Cultural Significance
The ceramic sequence of Xcalumkín begins with some materials from the Late Preclassic, a scarce presence from the Early Classic and a strong occupation from the Late and Terminal Classic. The dates recorded in the hieroglyphic inscriptions of Xcalumkín range from 731 to 771 AD. There are apparently no Postclassic elements. Xcalumkín was an important Mayan settlement of the Classic period, especially from 600 to 1000 AD. Its remains extend over an average area of 10 km². In its buildings, the succession of three architectural phases typical of the Puuc style has been documented. It is worth mentioning that only a few buildings in Xcalumkín were used as temples; There are no pyramidal foundations of great height and no ball game has been recorded.
